If there’s one item in my closet that absolutely screams “FRIVOLITY!” it’s this pink faux fur coat.
But that’s exactly why I love it. This coat was a Christmas gift from my dear aunt in 2009, and – I have to be honest – I didn’t totally embrace it until the last year or so. It wasn’t that I was afraid to wear it, exactly. Clearly you know me well enough by now to know that I don’t really roll that way. But a pink fur coat in a sea of black pea coats just seemed a bit…impractical.
But isn’t that what some gifts are supposed to be? They’re things that you would never buy for yourself. They’re not sensible. They’re a luxury. They’re indulgent. They’re fun.
But here’s the thing. For a few years, I didn’t think I deserved fun when it came to my wardrobe. I went through a period of sartorial self-doubt. I experienced a major identity crisis related to some struggles within my personal life. For a while, what I put on my body was a way to cover up my lack of true confidence. Loud, quirky pieces? Sure. Crazy patterns? Absolutely. Vintage? DUH. But clothes that were just plain fun? No way. Not here. Not on me.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve slowly but surely been rebuilding my confidence and quieting those insecurities. Now, I wear this pink faux fur coat everywhere. It’s become a symbol of the self-assurance I’ve developed.
Even if a pink faux fur coat isn’t your thing, you should find at least one piece in your wardrobe that makes you feel uniquely you. So, while not everyone really needs a literal pink faux fur coat, everyone definitely needs a metaphorical one. Find one thing that, when you put it on, makes you feel like the absolute coolest, best version of yourself.
